I paint birds on people's heads because when I lived on the enchanting island of Roatan in Honduras, I met Lily. She was known as "Mama Old Girl" and to me she was a nature goddess. Lily had a small hut on her family's land down by the mangroves. There she told me about the birds landing on her head. She took that for a sign of tranquility and harmony with nature. One day a bird did land on my head near her hut as we sat outside having a picnic. I was impressed enough that it was in my subconscious and channeled outward to show up in my paintings more than a few times.
